The present-day administrative name, Geumsan-gun, dates back to March 1, 1914 with the integration of the former Geumsan-gun and Jinsan-gun.
During the Baekje period, the former Geumsan-gun was called Jinnae-gun or Jinnaeeul-gun. After Silla unified the Three Kingdoms, its name was changed to Jinye-gun during the reign of King Gyeongdeok. During the early Goryeo Dynasty, it was called Jinye-hyeon, before it was promoted to the status of Geumju-gun in 1305 (31st year of King Chungnyeol’s reign) and Kim Sin (Jigeumjusa Geumjugun) was designated as governor to administer over 5 hyeons: Buri-hyeon, Cheonggeo-hyeon, Mupung-hyeon and Jindong-hyeon. This is where the name ‘Geumsan’ originated from. [Korean History: 57th Volume]. In 1413 (13th year of King Taejong’s reign), Geumju-gun was renamed Geumsan-gun, which continued to be used well into the end of the Joseon Dynasty.
During the Baekje period, the former Jinsan-gun was called Jindong-hyeon before becoming a subject hyeon of Hwangsan-gun after Silla unified the Three Kingdoms.
Its name was changed to Okgye-bu in the early Goryeo Dynasty, and became a part of Geumju-gun in 1305 (31st year of King Chungnyeol’s reign). Later in 1390, it became a subject hyeon of Gosan-hyeon. In 1393 (2nd year of King Taejo’s reign), following the burial of the umbilical cord of King Taejo in Maninsan Mountain, it was promoted to Jinju-gun and began to be overseen by a governor (Jijinjusa). In 1413 (13th year of King Taejong‘s reign), its name was again changed to Jinsan-gun. On August 4, 1896, following the issuance of Royal Order No. 36 that defined the thirteen provinces, Geumsan-gun and Jinsan-gun, which had been a part of Gongju-bu, Chungcheongnam-do, were incorporated into Jeollabuk-do. On March 1, 1914, Jinsan-gun merged with Geumsan-gun and became today's Geumsan-gun. It initially consisted of 10 myeons: Geumsan-myeon, Geumseong-myeon, Jewon-myeon, Buri-myeon, Gunbuk-myeon, Namil-myeon, Nami-myeon, Jinsan-myeon, Boksu-myeon, and Chubu-myeon. Later on November 1, 1940, in accordance with Ordinance No. 221, Geumsan-myeon was promoted to Geumsan-eup, and consisted of one -eup and nine -myeons.
Later on January 1, 1963, following the reorganization of administrative divisions of Seoul, provinces, and -guns and -gus in accordance with the law (Act No. 1172), Geumsan-gun was transferred from Jeollabuk-do to Chungcheongnam-do and remains there to this day.
As for the changes in the administrative divisions following the liberation of Korea from Japanese colonial rule, the Gunbuk-myeon Office, which had been situated in Naebu-ri at the time, relocated to a new building in Dudu-ri in December 1953. Also, in accordance with –Gun Ordinance No. 28, the Gunbuk-myeon Naebu branch office was newly established on May 27, 1962. On July 1, 1973, Yongji-ri, Boksu-myeon was incorporated into Chubu-myeon in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 6542.
